When I am using my Acer, hooked up to the charger or not, it will shut down randomly and then restart again. It has done it when I've barely started on the Acer or when I've been on it after just a little bit. March Some of these models have a safety switch on the mainboard which can accidentally shutdown the laptop due to misalignment of the case with the switch when being moved around or pressure on the keyboard or touchpad.

This lengthy thread describes two types of switches that are commonly used, a normally-off or a normally-on switch. In the former, the case doesn't push hard enough against the switch to keep power on.

In the latter, the case pushes too hard and cuts the power. The fixes were simple involving tape spacers. Sorry, I can't determine which type of switch you have in your model and will require opening the machine to find the switch.Dmitriy Likhten. The Ah has a sort-of known crashing problem. It seems to randomly freeze. There is no BSOD and it has been known to happen in the same way in linux. Updating the firmware to the latest version provided by acer helps a bit since the freezing is down to once every couple of days vs once every couple of hrs or more frequent.

So the question is: Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue, and what sort of fixes including changing parts will fix it. Still gathering info. The most useful lead is the replacing of the ram seems to help. Still need to confirm AND get some model numbers for known ram that fixes the issue.

Acer is the number one laptop i fix daily, so many of them go wrong. The flickering screen, nosey fans, random crashs.

If you fix yours get rid of it quickly. I've been very disappointed with the frequent freezes since I bought it last year. I would have expected better from a major company like Acer. It's the last Acer product I will ever buy. I don't get the sound. My previous laptop, AMD based, lasted 10 yrs on linux. This one is going to be chucked as I have found no solution in the last year.

My guess is the atom chip which handles the video is the culprit. Show 14 more comments. Look i had the same problem. My netbook froze,so i had to hard reset it.I've had it since late December It was a Christmas gift, so I imagine that my family bought it in late November or early December I don't remember when it started, but it randomly freezes on me now - to the point it drives me a bit mad.

All I can do to fix it is hit the power button. I know it freezes - it's nothing wrong with the Touchpad or Mouse as the clock freezes too, and nothing happens when I close it and open it up again. If it happens when I'm either listening to music or watching a movie, the screen freezes and the sound is just buzzing loudly.

When I say 'randomly' - I really mean randomly. I'm not doing anything particular when it freezes, as it freezes during all sort of activities. It can be when I log into my email, or my online calendar, or when I'm typing in Word. Sometimes when it's in screensaver mode or 'sleeping' and sometimes when I'm doing nothing - just being at the desktop with no programs open.

Sometimes it can freeze quite quickly after I've started it up, and sometimes it can take several hours. Sometimes weeks can pass without it freezing, and sometimes it can freeze up to times a day. It is fully updated - at least I can't seem to find any non-installed updates. I've scanned it for virus Avast Antivirus and it can't find anything.

I've also tried resetting the whole laptop to factory settings but that did not work either. I think I've been able to describe all the essential details, but if there is anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.

If there is any sort of 'internal function' or other external program that I haven't tried, which you think I should, please tell me. I'm willing to try. In the last 48 hours since the first freeze, it has frozen again a number of times, i've lost count of how many. Each time it freezes I have to manually shut it down by holding the power button as I have no other choice.

It then takes an age to restart, sometimes freezing in the process of restarting. Once it finally loads, cue the cycle again as it inevitably freezes.
